Civil Engineering
At the NBA accredited Dept of Civil Engineering, RIET aims at producing bright graduates in Civil Engineering to meet the rapid technological advances and industrial requirements. The department has highly qualified faculty members specialised in various disciplines of Civil Engineering. They add strength to the department with their competitive skills and vibrant dedication. The department is also equipped to cater to the external projects and consultancy work along with academics.
The Department of Civil Engineering was started in the year 2009 with an undergraduate programme affiliated to Kerala University. The programme (B Tech in Civil Engineering) has a sanctioned intake of 60 students. From 2015, it is offered as per curriculum of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU). The department offers a Post-Graduate programme (M.Tech) in Geotechnical Engineering, with an annual intake of 18 students.

- Dr. K Balan was conferred with the “Achievement Award” for the development of the International Geosynthetics Society Indian Chapter, 2019.
- Dr. K Balan was appointed as a Technical Member of the Bureau of Indian Standards Technical Committee on Geosynthetics TX30.
- Dr. K Balan was incorporated as the Technical Sub Committee Member (H– 5) of Indian Road Congress, New Delhi, for the use of Coir Geotextiles in Rural Road applications.
- Dr. K Balan was incorporated as the Executive Member of “iGrip”, an initiative of IIT Gandhinagar, Gujarat for the dissemination of Geotechnical Engineering knowledge. (February 2019)
- Dr. K Balan has participated in the drafting of specifications of non-woven / stitched coir blankets for the Bureau of Indian Standards, at Coir Board Office, Cochin, on 16th December 2019.
- Dr. K Balan has delivered a talk on FDP conducted by Vishwajyothi College of Engineering and Technology, Vazhakkulam, Muvattupuzha on “GeoHazards and Disaster Mitigation” on 12th December 2019.
- Dr. K Balan organized and delivered a keynote lecture in an International Conference on “Geotechnics of Highspeed Corridors” at Thiruvananthapuram on behalf of Indian Geotechnical Society, Thiruvananthapuram Chapter.
- Dr. K Balan has delivered a talk on “Application of coir geotextiles in Rural Roads”, in Workshop organized by NIT Trichy and Coir Board at NIT Trichy. (July 2019)

DHEERA 2K19
International Women’s day was organised under the title DHEERA on 12th March 2019. It was inaugurated by Aswathy Jwala (Founder of Jwala Foundation) along with Robin Chaplin as the chief guest. Function was presided over by Principal, Dr. Raveendranathan.
ITIHA 2K18 a three day National Level Techno Cultural fest of RIET which commenced on March 8, 2018. It was the amalgamation of the talent and resources of the students of six specialised arms of RIET. ITIHA 2K18 was incorporated with the workshop on National Students Space Challenge, by IIT Kharagpur for all disciplines of engineering.
It was an attempt to challenge new possibilities, inspire innovations and a platform to showcase and hone our technical talents and skills.
Rejoicing the world of rhythm and music ITIHA 2K18 showcased pro shows for the first time in south Kerala with artists from Tomorrow land Fame Lost Stories and Teri Miko

- Zonal Championship Competition: A Zonal Championship competition in association with Fest Shastra IIT Madras was conducted at RIET on 26 October 2019. A workshop on the topic “Building Construction “ handled by industrial experts was held at RIET and competition was conducted at the end of the second day. 5 students from Civil Department were selected for the second round at IIT Madras.
C7 – Cricket Tournament 2K19
It is a cricket tournament conducted by the Dept of Civil Engineering of RIET. C stands for charity, cricket, civil. It is a charity fund raising event. The champions of 2K19 are Mechmen (S6 Mech)

Student Chapter of Indian Geotechnical Society, was inaugurated on 13th March 2018 by Dr. G Venkatappa Rao, Professor Emirtus, IIT Gandhinagar, Gujarat along with Dr. Venkataraman, President of Indian Chapter of International Geosynthetic Society, New Delhi in a function presided over by Principal, Dr. Sathykumar R. A 2-day hands-on training workshop was conducted at RIET on 5-6 April 2019 by BUILD U which is an avenue for enriching students’ engineering caliber. As Civil Engineering impacts our lives in a big way, practical skills are very important to have for an aspiring Civil Engineer. This session made them aware of the complete planning procedure, Arch masonry, Reinforcement details of beams and columns along with the foundation. Students after training This workshop program was designed to acquaint students with the practical or hands-on knowledge, thereby giving the students an opportunity to witness practically what they have studied in class. This program was a successful one as around 60 students participated.

Poster Competition on World Environmental Day (5 June 2021)
To bring out the creative expression of the students of RIET and also to spread awareness about the importance of nature, an online Poster Competition was conducted by Department of Civil Engineering Association, Sparcz on 5th June, 2021 on the occasion of World Environmental Day. The theme of the competition was ‘Reimagine. Recreate. Restore our Ecosystem’. Ecosystem restoration can take many forms: Growing trees, greening cities, rewilding gardens, changing diets or cleaning up rivers and coasts. A very good response was received. 81 enthusiastic students of various departments have send their posters online.
Mr. Rahib Shajahan and Mr. Harikrishnan T S were the student coordinators and Ms. Anjana V G was the faculty coordinator of the competition. The winners of the competition are: First Prize: Irfan S, S4, CSE Second Prize: Muhsina F, S2, CE Third Prize: Vivek R B, S4, AE.
